The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) was launched with the noble goal of “Housing for All.”
But in the ground reality of India’s urban slums and working-class areas, that dream is still too small, too slow, and too selective.
In some cities, the scheme has started — but only in pockets.
A few beneficiaries have received houses, but lakhs of eligible poor are still waiting. There are delays in land allocation, construction, fund release, and transparency. This has created a two-speed system — a fast-track for the powerful, and a waiting line for the poor.
